Advanced Analytics for Hydrocarbon Exploration & Environmental Monitoring
PetroStrat is pleased to announce we are now offering Geochemistry, as part of our world-leading integrated geoscience services. This exciting new capability is delivered by a highly experienced team who joined PetroStrat through the acquisition of CGG-Viridien’s Geology Group. They bring decades of geochemical knowledge, now fully integrated into our service packages for both traditional energy applications, as well as unconventionals and energy transition sectors. This enhances our ability to support subsurface evaluation, reducing uncertainty across exploration and development projects
Whether you’re evaluating routine source rock potential and maturity, analysing the composition of crude oil, gas or water, investigating reservoir geochemistry or conducting environmental assessments, we deliver the data you need: accurately, reliably, and on time.
How Geochemical Analysis Can Support Your Subsurface Project
Geochemical analyses provide a fundamental dataset for understanding the processes controlling the formation, migration, accumulation and alteration of hydrocarbons. By providing an overview of these processes, geochemistry is a powerful tool for reducing exploratory risks, improving production strategies and supporting efficient subsurface projects. By combining geochemical and geological data, we deliver consistent and calibrated geoscience data across entire fields or plays.
- Geochemical analysis supports the identification of potential source rocks and active petroleum systems. at different scales
- Detailed geochemical inversion of migrated hydrocarbons (seeps and stains) to support the identification of potential source rocks where no other data is available
- Integration of optical, geochemical and geological methods to estimate thermal maturity and reduce uncertainties in thermal models
- Reservoir geochemistry to determine the presence of compartmentalisation, Tar Mats and Gravity segregation (among other processes)
- Establishing oil/gas families and providing source rocks-fluids correlation

Key capabilities of our new Geochemistry team
Our state-of-the-art Geochemistry Lab combines high-precision analytical services with cutting edge technology, to provide a comprehensive range of services to assess the thermal maturity, composition, and hydrocarbon potential of organic matter.
Carbon & Sulphur Analysis
We offer detailed carbon and sulphur profiling essential for characterising source rocks and assessing environmental baselines:
• Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Total Carbon and Total Sulphur
Rock-Eval 6 Pyrolysis
Industry-standard for exploration, unconventionals and reservoir analysis, providing insight into hydrocarbon generation potential and kerogen type.
Thermal Maturity Assessment
Evaluate the thermal evolution of source rocks and reservoirs with multiple, complementary indicators:
- Vitrinite Reflectance (Ro%)
- Spore Colour Index (SCI)
Solvent Extraction
Extractable organic matter is isolated using solvent-based techniques, supporting downstream GC and GC-MS characterisation.
Hydrocarbon Characterisation
Full-range oil profiling, including gasoline-range hydrocarbons, to support reservoir correlation, biodegradation studies, and contamination assessments.
- Whole Oil GC. Full-range oil profiling.
- Whole Extract GC. Detailed compositional analysis.
Headspace Gas Analysis (Organics Only)
Fast, sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and light hydrocarbons. Ideal for both exploration and environmental sampling programs.
Targeted Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC & GC-MS)
In-depth hydrocarbon profiling for source rock origin (Organofacies), depositional environment, secondary alteration processes and thermal maturity assessment.
- Alkane GC
- Alkane, Aromatic & Diamondoid GC-MS
