Enhanced Weathering Microplastics Website

PetroStrat is expanding its portfolio with two new services: Mineralogical Analysis For Enhanced Weathering and Microplastic Analysis. These latest additions strengthen our growing portfolio of low-carbon and environmental geoscience services, developed to support clients in traditional energy, renewables and climate technology sectors.

With over 25 years of experience characterising the subsurface, and with a team of over 100 dedicated specialists, PetroStrat is helping our clients power the global energy transition.

Supporting Enhanced Weathering With Mineralogical Analysis

Enhanced weathering is an emerging carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method that accelerates the natural breakdown of silicate minerals to capture CO₂ from the atmosphere. When these minerals dissolve, they convert CO₂ into stable bicarbonate, which can be stored long-term in soils or oceans.

PetroStrat supports enhanced weathering initiatives with detailed mineralogical analysis. We provide quality control for feedstock materials, baseline characterisation of target sediments and long-term monitoring of weathering behaviour. Our team help ensure clients have the best data available to support the most scientifically robust interpretations in enhanced weathering projects.

This service builds on our existing expertise in sedimentology, mineralogy and geochemistry. These are fields where accuracy and detail are critical for assessing performance and permanence in CDR projects.

Microplastic Analysis  / Measuring Microplastic Pollution

Microplastics are recognised as one of the most widespread and persistent pollutants in nature. As global plastic production rises, so does the occurrence of microplastic pollution, with particles being identified in every ecosystem on Earth, from the deep ocean to agricultural soils, and even in the air we breathe and the water we drink. There is a growing body of research linking microplastic exposure to adverse health effects in living organisms. As public awareness and concern increases as to the risks of microplastic, there are calls for greater protection of the environment, with governmental policies restricting the use or release of microplastic now coming into force.

PetroStrat is proudly applying our geoscience expertise to support microplastic monitoring and research efforts. Our laboratory team use a range of techniques, including methods developed in-house, to extract and analyse microplastic particles. Using our advanced microscopy suite (including SEM) and pyrolysis-GCMS, we measure particle abundance, size, shape, texture, fluorescence behaviour and polymer type.

By combining these analyses with our geological and mineralogical knowledge, we produce a holistic understanding of the sample and its source. We are also developing new high-throughput screening methods to give clients a range of options for rapid, reliable analysis.
