PetroStrat has unrivalled experience providing wellsite and post-well stratigraphic services in North America, with a long track record of successful U.S. and international projects. Additionally, the company has over 16 years of experience in delivering real-time, fully quantitative biostratigraphy in the challenging environment of the Gulf of Mexico.
PetroStrat has leading experience analysing the entire stratigraphic column of the Gulf of Mexico from Pleistocene to Jurassic, utilising all three fossil groups to provide an integrated high-resolution, three-dimensional biostratigraphic framework.
With offices in Houston, TX, Mandeville, LA, and Calgary we are perfectly positioned to service the stratigraphic and sedimentological needs for conventional and unconventional resource exploration in the North American continent, as well as for new energy initiatives such as CCUS. Our commitment to excellence and cutting-edge methodologies sets us apart from the competition, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of delivering our world-renowned services.

Gulf of Mexico
- PetroStrat acquired Paleo Data in 2021, bringing in their 56 years of business experience
- Over 12,000 boreholes examined for micro and nanno in offshore US GoM
- Over 5,000 boreholes examined for micro along the Gulf Coast (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL)
- Experience in Unconventional plays: Haynesville, Eagle Ford – Tuscaloosa, Austin/Ector Chalk, DJ, Powder River,
- Access to 72 years worth of legacy data from other service providers
- Offices and Lab in Houston and Mandeville
- Mandeville within hours of most shore bases.
- Reports are delivered in standard format using consistent naming, making them easy to compare for borehole to borehole.
Wilcox Formation Biostratigraphy (Paleocene)
- Unique integration of palynology generates a three-dimensional biostratigraphic framework of all three fossil disciplines, providing up to a five-fold increase in stratigraphic resolution
- Developed sequence stratigraphic scheme with over 20 lower-order sequences, now regionally mapped from onshore Gulf Coast to deep water low-stand fans (where some of the biggest discoveries have been made in US GoM in recent years)
- experience includes:
- Over 100 analysed well and outcrop sections real-time wellsite support provided for over 40 deepwater wells, including the prolific peridido area
- Conducted several regional, multi-well integrated studies

Norphlet Formation Biostratigraphy (Mesozoic)
- Numerous wells analysed covering the Mesozoic section of the Norphlet Formation
- Deep Jurassic Norphlet target and the overlying Cretaceous formations also analysed
Shallow and Deepwater Miocene Target Reservoirs
- In-house world-leading forams expert involved in several recent deepwater successes
- A wealth of expertise in nannopalaeontology and micropalaeontology across both shallow and deepwater
Alaska
- Provision of integrated palynology and micropalaeontology services
- Review of vintage multi-well data sets
Canada
Canada Atlantic Margins
- Provided wellsite biostratigraphy services on several deepwater exploration wells offshore Newfoundland (Orphan Basin and Laurentian Basin)
- Multidisciplinary post-well analysis on recent wells in the Flemish Pass
- Substantial wellsite and post-well biostratigraphy experience on the Scotian Shelf
- Review and new analysis of 26 wells (Cretaceous to Triassic) across the Nova Scotia margin (as part of a major Play Fairway Analysis for whole Nova Scotian margin, initiated by the Offshore Energy Research Association of the Nova Scotia Department of Energy
- Biostratigraphic analysis of 7 well Carboniferous study, offshore Nova Scotia
- Biostratigraphic analysis of wells and field samples from offshore and onshore Sydney and Magdalen Basins
Integrated Stratigraphic Studies in Canada
In addition to our routine wellsite and post-well work, we have completed four non-exclusive stratigraphy studies on the Newfoundland Margin. These studies focus on the Jurassic and Cretaceous and apply a rationalised, robust, and high-resolution biostratigraphic framework, based on full integration of all three biostratigraphic disciplines (micropalaeontology, nannopalaeontology, and palynology). The more recent Carson Basin and Southern Flemish Pass studies are products of our joint venture Future Geoscience; these fully integrated studies also include chemostratigraphy, isotope stratigraphy and provenance investigations, applying the full stratigraphic toolbox.

Arctic Canada
PetroStrat has substantial biostratigraphic experience in the following areas of Artic Canada:
- Beaufort Sea
- Baffin Island
- Collaboration with Cambridge Arctic Shell Program; micropalaeontology within Devonian to Cretaceous successions
- Yukon & Northwest Territories
- Palynology and stratigraphy of Devonian to Paleogene successions
Western Canada
- Significant experience in Jurassic to Paleogene palynology and stratigraphy in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan
- Worked on recent studies focusing on the Manville Group
North America Unconventionals
- Reservoir characterisation expertise using palynofacies – powerful tool for evaluating palaeoenvironments and source rock facies quality
- Integrated biostratigraphic services focused on event stratigraphy
- PetroStrat’s experience in unconventional plays in North America:
- Permian Basin
- Eagle Ford
- Marcellus
- Niobrara Duvernay Shale (Canada)
- Oil Sands (Canada)
Mexico
PetroStrat has extensive background in Mexico analysing strata for biostratigraphy spanning from the Tertiary Neogene through to the Jurassic.
Paleogene Perdido
- High-resolution biostratigraphic analysis of Paleogene well sections along the deepwater Perdido trend
- Proven success on the Mexican side of the border
Onshore Mexico
- Biostratigraphy analysis of Cretaceous and Jurassic strata in the Tampico Basin/Tuxpan Platform area
- Analysis of cretaceous intervals of wells in the Veracruz Basin
Offshore Sureste
- Wellsite biostratigraphy and monitoring of 7 wells, including significant discovery (Zama) and it’s appraisal wells
- Micro- and nannofossil analysis proved to be invaluable in the region
PetroStrat has collated and reviewed biostratigraphic data for a 15-well non-propriety multiclient study in the Sureste Basin. The project has so far garnered significant attention from the industry. For more information on the study, please Contact Us.
