We are looking forward to seeing you all in Krakow, Poland, for The Micropaleontology Society’s Annual General Meeting 2025. Our team is busy preparing their talk poster and talk for the conference, and today we want to offer an exclusive first peek at what they will be presenting!
Talk – Beneath the Surface: A Biostratigrapher’s Role in Unlocking Earth’s Secrets
Martha E. Gibson, Charlotte Miles Dylan Roberts, Imran Ali, Sarah Searle
Friday 8th November, Morning Session at 9am
Biostratigraphy is the ultimate tool for exploring the geological record and validating subsurface interpretations. At PetroStrat, we integrate micropalaeontology, palynology, and nannopalaeontology, alongside reservoir geology, to create high-resolution stratigraphic frameworks. These frameworks (1) provide stratigraphic control where other approaches are poor, (2) interpret palaeoenvironments and understand sediment provenance, (3) define sequence stratigraphy, (4) support real time drilling and geo-steering, and (5) explain the unexpected (e.g., faults, unconformities, facies changes).
A biostratigrapher is a data gather and interpreter. But this is not all a biostratigrapher does. We will cover what a PetroStrat biostratigrapher in industry does with the aim of demystifying the job role and career pathways and shed light on how biostratigraphy is playing a key role in supporting the energy transition. We will (1) illustrate the daily roles of a PetroStrat stratigrapher from data gathering to Client reporting, (2) address common misconceptions about industry workloads, training, publishing, and conference attendance, (3) show our keen focus on digitisation and the application of new methods and technologies, and (4) give examples of how PetroStrat is committed to solutions for the renewable energy (wind, solar, geothermal) and waste management (CCS) sectors.
Poster – From Fossils to Fields: The Practical Power of Biostratigraphy
Charlotte Miles, Martha E. Gibson, Dylan Roberts, Imran Ali, Sarah Searle
PetroStrat is a geotechnical service company that has one of the largest teams of in-house specialist biostratigraphers in the world. Combined, our micropalaeontologists, nannopalaeontologists, and palynologists have industry-leading and renowned worldwide knowledge that covers the entire Phanerozoic.
Biostratigraphy provides a valuable framework for understanding Earth’s complex history. It is a fundamental tool used in geological investigations to establish relative rock ages, reconstruct past environments and correlate formations (especially when seismic control is poor and across basin margins), aid in resource exploration, and support the Energy Transition.
Don’t forget to join us for our Applied Stratigraphy Workshop!

This interactive workshop, designed by our world-leading team of biostratigraphers, will provide attendees with a hands-on experience of the key stages involved in a typical biostratigraphic project within the industry.
Our team of biostratigraphy experts have carefully curated the content to ensure that participants gain valuable insights and practical skills.
