We are pleased to share that PetroStrat will be attending the North Africa & Mediterranean Energy & Hydrogen Exhibition and Conference (NAPEC) 2025, which takes place from 6-8 October at the Oran International Convention Centre Mohamed Ben Ahmed (CCO), Algeria.
As one of the largest events in Africa dedicated to energy and hydrocarbons, NAPEC provides a vital platform for operators, service providers, and policymakers to come together to shape the future of the North African and Mediterranean energy sector. This year’s programme will focus on achieving an efficient the energy mix in the region, through collaboration, investment and innovation.

PetroStrat Presentation: New geological insights into the Amguid Spur and Oued Mya Basins, Algeria
Presentation title: New insights into the sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Ordovician of the Amguid Spur and Oued Mya Basins, Algeria
Authors: Philip Hayward (PetroStrat), Ross McCabe (PetroStrat), Robert Gater (PetroStrat), Georgia Mills (PetroStrat), Neil McDougall, Sonatrach Exploration Division Team
Exclusive summary by Philip Hayward and our Reservoir Geology team
Presented here are insights from an integrated multidisciplinary study assessing the remaining prospectivity of the Ordovician plays in the northern Amguid Messaoud and Oued Mya areas, Algeria, bringing together sedimentological, stratigraphic, structural, petrographic, seismic, PSA, and petrophysical datasets.
New results indicate the presence of an expanded Late Ordovician glaciogenic play, comparable to those found in the Illizi and Murzuq Basins. Using the published reservoir stratigraphy applied to the Illizi/Murzuq reservoirs (McDougall et al. 2002; McDougall et al. 2006), the succession is divided into a series of five erosional/unconformably based sand/mud-prone formation equivalent subunits: IV-0, IV-1, IV-2, IV-3 and IV-4, reflecting the successive periods of ice melting and changes in accommodation space. Deposition in the study area is primarily composed of mud-prone debris flow and soft sedimentary deformed muddy/sandy slope deposits most consistently associated with the Subunit IV-2 (colloquially ‘Argiles Microconglomeratique’). Where preserved, the medium/coarse-grained proglacial sandstones of Subunits IV-3 and IV-4 (Dalle m’Kratta Formation equivalent) offer the best reservoir potential; however, these sandstones are highly-variable in terms of reservoir presence, thickness, and quality. The new insights revealed by this study point to an emerging new play in a mature exploration area and value of an integrated, multidisciplinary reservoir characterisation approach in unlocking future exploration potential.

Short bio of the PetroStrat authors
Philip Hayward (Presenting)

Philip has close to 15 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry for a range of consultancy companies primarily focussing on clastic petrography, reservoir quality evaluation, and sedimentology. Philip joined PetroStrat in February 2025 following the acquisition of CGG (Roberston) Geology and is a Technical Lead in our integrated Reservoir Geology group.
Ross McCabe

Ross has 20 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry in a variety of technical and leadership roles in several leading service companies. Ross’s technical background is in chemostratigraphy and sediment provenance, which he has applied all over the world but with specific focus on Africa and the Middle East.
Robert Gater

Rob has 16 years petroleum industry experience, with particular focus on North Africa, the Norwegian Continental Shelf, the Middle East and Pakistan. His expertise includes clastic core description, petrography, reservoir quality and sequence stratigraphy. Rob joined PetroStrat in 2025 following 15 years at Robertsons (CGG).
Georgia Mills

Georgia Mills has almost 3 years of experience in oil and gas consultancy, with a technical focus in clastic sedimentology including core description and petrography. Georgia joined PetroStrat in February 2025 and currently sits within our Reservoir Geology group.
